Sunday 16th July 2023
Our departure point is at Larissis Station at 7.30 a.m. and our trip is about to set off!! We will have a stopover for rest, snacks and coffee and we will continue our trip to Metochi of Argolida following a wonderful route through the greenery. There, we will board a boat and after a journey of about 25 minutes, we will reach the wonderful island of Hydra.
An island without cars, an island of unparalleled and undeniable beauty. The magnificent little island of the Revolution and the international jet set. The port city, cosmopolitan, elegant, with the mansions of the 18th century, the captains’ houses, the old churches, the wells, the cobbled streets that spread everywhere will take us on a journey back in time. We will admire the well-preserved mansions and imposing public buildings. In every corner of the island we observe the maritime history of Hydra. Cannons that still mark the Aegean, busts of admirals, captains’ houses. Here lived revolutionaries, such as Miaoulis and Kountouriotis.
On the island we will have a beautiful tour of the historical sights and we will also have a lot of free time available to be dazzled by its beauties!! The beautiful paved streets, the flower-filled houses, the mansions, which count 300 years of proud existence, all contribute to the reputation of the island as one of the most popular destinations for thousands of people annually! We can visit Kaminia, a small port of Art. There we will discover the “Red House”. It is an important attraction of the island which was built in 1786, inhabited by Admiral Miaoulis and today hosts exhibitions. Then we can ascend to the oldest district of Hydra, Kiafa, high above the port. The landscape is unique since narrow alleys, imposing mansions, old grocery stores and small hotels compose a painting. Next stop is the 7 windmills, the highest point of the hill of Agios Athanasios. The view will take us off and compensate! The pharmacy-museum, we will find it in the alleys of Hydra town, has the same form since it opened in 1890. Whoever of us wishes, can climb to the monastery of Prophet Elias and then to Klimakio the peak of Mount Eros. The view is simply unique! The two museums, ecclesiastical and Byzantine, and the historic houses of Pavlos and Lazaros Kountouriotis invite you to dive into the glorious past!
Those who wish to swim can visit the beaches of Skala and Hydroneta. Also, below Castello is Mikro Kamini, a pebbly beach with sunbeds. Another option is Avlaki.
The traditional taverns and restaurants will reward us with the wonderful flavors of seafood and fish such as red mullets or zarganes savoro-, octopus in wine, stuffed squid, cuttlefish with pilaf with their ink and kakavia. There are also served gogkes, short handmade pasta of Arvanite cuisine, green pies, snails stewed. Also, there are meat options such as lamb kapamas and of course Hydra almonds with rose water in a shape that looks like a pear.
In the afternoon, around 17:00, we board the boat to return to Metochi. From there, we depart with an intermediate short stop for rest. Early in the evening arrival in Athens!
